Unfortunate round in Zandvoort for Andrea Caldarelli

Unlucky end for Andrea Caldarelli in Zandvoort, fifth 2018 ADAC GT Masters round. The Italian, Factory Driver for Lamborghini Squadra Corse for Orange 1 by GRT, faced a difficult weekend scoring a double zero in the drivers’ championship. Just two weeks after the great as unexpected podium in Nurburgring, Andrea has literally neither jumped into the car as Mirko Bortolotti, who qualified second, has been involved in a crash in the early stage of lap 1. Back at the wheel for Sunday’s qualifying, Andrea couldn’t go further 25th fastest lap, stuck in traffic, from where he started in the race. Despite an extra formation-lap, Andrea drove the first stint, passing the car to Bortolotti in 18th place. Shortly after a safety-car was called by race control due a car stopped, giving the Italian pair the illusion to fight for some points. Unfortunately, a penalty imposed to the team due a shortened time in the pit-stop for the driver change, costed any valuable result.

“This wasn’t the week end we’re hoping for. From Friday pace we knew would have been possible being competitive, and our chance to maximize the potential was Saturday, as it was in Nurburgring. Unfortunately, a contact in the first lap, which in my opinion was avoidable looking at the situation, prevented us from the victory’s fight. Then on Sunday we’ve been stuck in traffic, and overtaking in Zandvoort is almost impossible. During the race, Mirko and I have pushed as much as we could, but a penalty for shortened pit-stop, less than 0.1s, prevented us from some points”.
